| When Can They Start? |
| There is no reason why children should not start skiing as soon as they
can walk properly, say around three years old. In some resorts they can
even attend ski school at this age. However, before the age of seven or
eight, most children do not master any advanced techniques, so they will
not have missed out if they start a few years later. Be guided by the
child: if they want to ski, fine; if not, don't force them. |

Very young babies should not be taken on the upper
slopes because their inner ear cannot yet
properly adjust to changes in pressure.
Some resorts have a municipal crèche
where you may be able to place your child. Otherwise try a local nanny:
phone the Tourist Office before you arrive. The simplest and most satisfactory
option may be to book a chalet holiday with a specialized tour group which
offers an in-house crèche. Failing this, you may have to take your own
baby-sitter. Grandparents could be considered since they are cheap and
not usually so keen on skiing as their offspring.
Enquire before you book. Skiing with the family can be an expensive business,
so self-catering and self-drive
should be considered.
