Thursday 2 October

Introduction

For loads of special offers, savings and benefits - join the Ski Club of Great Britain now! Fresh snow is forecast across the whole of Austria between Thursday and Sunday.

The Grande Motte glacier at Tignes in France is once again open with good conditions for snowsports.

The riding at Val Senales in Italy is great. The glacier has a good snow base and the skies are predominantly sunny and will remain this way for the weekend.

Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland are both open for snowsports and the riding is great. Dry weather is forecast over the weekend but with increasing clouds.

The summer ski season has ended on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler in Canada.

Timberline in America is now operating their autumn skiing schedule and the lifts are only open for skiing over the weekend.

The winter season is drawing to a close and only three resorts are open for skiing in Australia on Thursday.

More fresh snow has fallen in New Zealand this week. The recent wintery weather has permitted Coronet Peak to reopen despite having already closed for the season.

Spring riding conditions dominate the Chilean ski scene this week with more bright and sunny weather. Chilean riding can now only take place at Valle Nevado or Portillo, as the rest of the resorts we report on have closed.

Las Lenas in Argentina has closed for the 2008 season.

Snow reports for Austria Austria

Snow fell on the Dachstein (60cm) and Hintertux (55cm) glaciers on Tuesday. The new snow has helped to improve the piste conditions at both resorts.

Following new snow there are now two pistes open at Dachstein and Hintertux has increased the open area to 16km. The steeper slopes at Hintertux have icy patches so watch your speed.

Snow is forecast across Austria over the weekend. The most is forecast for the Molltal Glacier (50cm) which is expecting 21cm on Friday.

Snow reports for France France

The Grande Motte glacier at Tignes has reopened for skiing and boarding. The fine weather of the last few days is expected to continue over the weekend as well, with perhaps a dusting of snow at Tignes (15cm) on Friday.

At Les Deux Alpes the winter season starts on 29th November, although there is an earlier opening for the All Saints holiday between 25th October and 2nd November.

The winter season is scheduled to start at Val d'Isere from 29th November

Snow reports for Switzerland Switzerland

The weather at our reported Swiss resorts of Zermatt (90cm) and Saas Fee (144cm) is fine and sunny at the end of this week. There are some clouds in the sky but these are not expected to get particularly heavy until Sunday. The arriving cloud may bring fresh snow with it but this is not yet certain.

Snow reports for Italy Italy

The glacier at Val Senales (50cm) is open for skiing and boarding on Thursday. Fantastic sunny weather is forecast over the weekend making for some very pleasant skiing on the five runs that are currently open.

Cervinia is planning to open on 31st October and Presena on 1st November

Snow reports for USA Snow reports for Canada North America

The summer ski season has finished on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler, Canada and skiing will resume on the glacier on the 27th November.

Timberline (150cm) in America is closed for skiing during the week but the lifts are scheduled to operate from Friday to Sunday between 8am and 2pm during the autumn ski season.

 Australia

The winter season is drawing to a close and only three resorts are open for skiing in Australia on Thursday.

Mount Buller (0/75cm) and Perisher Blue (108/108cm) continue to have spring conditions on offer. The cover is packed in the morning but soon softens under the strength of the sun. The snow patrol at Perisher Blue is reporting that the cover is limited in the open area so it is essential to ski early before the snow becomes too soft.

Thredbo (0/108cm) is also open but with limited skiing available. On Thursday Supertrail, Walkabout and Cruiser are the only open trails. The best cover is on the upper mountain as lower down it has become patchy.

Mount Baw Baw's season ends on the 5th October. Unfortunately the cover is poor despite dustings of snow on Monday and Tuesday so it is not possible to ski on Thursday.

Ben Lomond, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham and Selwyn Snowfields in Australia have now closed for the season.

 New Zealand

Light snowfalls have landed at most of our reported resorts in New Zealand this week. The snow cover is generally firmly packed first thing in the morning then it softens as the day warms up. Some strong to gale force winds are forecast between now and Saturday night then the weather should improve for Sunday.

This week has seen a surprising turn of events at Coronet Peak (20/25cm). The resort had closed for the season but it has now reopened following the recent snowfalls. 10cm of snow fell on Wednesday and the riding is great even though the snow base is not the deepest in New Zealand.

The Remarkables (55/100cm) and Treble Cone (84/150cm) both received 15cm of new snow on Wednesday and Mt Lyford (150cm) is reporting that 15cm of fresh snow has landed since Monday.

On the North Island Turoa (486cm) has the best riding following 5cm of new snow landing on Wednesday night. The snow on the trails is pretty packed down but there are pockets of windblown powder snow off the trails.

 Chile

More fantastic sunny weather is expected at our reported Chilean resorts this weekend. Portillo (204/271cm) and Valle Nevado (160/160cm) both have excellent spring conditions with a good snow cover. These resorts are the only two that remain open in Chile.

La Parva, Chapa Verde, El Colorado and Termas de Chillan have all closed for the 2008 season.

 Argentina

In Argentina the season is now over at Las Lenas. However Cerro Catedral (0/125cm) and Chapelco (0/255cm) are still open with spring conditions across the mountain.

At both Cerro Catedral and Chapelco it is best to stick to the upper slopes as lower down the cover has become patchy. A dusting of snow is expected over the weekend at Cerro Catedral but this will not alter the conditions. There is still plenty of skiing at Chapelco as only five pistes are closed.
