A more elegant and less strenuous technique than up-unweighting is the
compression turn. This doesn't involve projecting the whole body out of
the snow to initiate the turn: instead the skis are brought to the surface
by retracting the legs.
Skiing powder in this way is very similar to skiing big, rounded moguls:
only here you let the build-up of pressure from the powder compress your
legs up under you, instead of the mogul (hence the name). This is the
most elegant way to ski powder and certainly the most sensuous. Such a
good word, that - sensuous.
