Skiing off piste and in powder is a matter of very simply
still understanding that you have to get your skis to change direction and
then maintain your speed and line at whatever pace you want to go at.
Too often we try to rush things again and again. Powder is the same, there
are many tips, tactics and techniquesthat we can explore but there is just
one tip to get started.
The ideal slope....
This cannot always be found but if you try this "tip" and your speed picks up too much then you may have selected a slope that is a bit to steep, so a gradual, consistent gradient, quite wide open slope would be ideal.

Stage 1 |
Feet/Legs
closer, try boucing on a trampoline. With a reasonably small depth of snow and easy gradient you can direct your skis more down the falline (most direct line down the slope) or just in a traverse and just have a go at bouncing on both feet in a straight line.
Close your stance a bit and think that you are trying to bounce on a trampoline.
|
 |
Stage 2 |
Sinking As the skis sink back in the snow
try to steer them gentle underneath you with your legs and feet.
|
 |
Stage 3 |
Rising. Keep the rhythm going and turn the feet/legs and skis.
As you rise out
of the snow turn your skis to slightly change direction. Keep gently boucing
and feeling the snow pushing you upwards, try to turn the feet in small
curves, nothing too agressive is needed.
|
 |
Stage 4 |
Get the
poles planting Keep boucing and see if you can time the pole
plant, so it rhythmically moves forwards and backwards.
Get used to using
it for rhythm and timing and co-ordination and pole plant.
|
 |
Stage 5 |
Keep the
arms forward Maintaining a good arm carriage
will help your balance, co-ordination and pole plant.
|
 |
Stage 6 |
Falling
is all part of learning As long as it is a soft landing, falling is all
part of learning to ski and especially learning to ski powder... If you
do not succeed, try, try again... it's worth it!
